Madeira 1720 Pather Borges Family Reserve

HM Borges, Pather 1720

Provenance: Christies Inc. New York , 9/11/2016

"...from the private cellars of the Borges family (not the company, this is from the family's own private reserves). Apart from a few bottles of 1715 Terrantez, this is the oldest Madeira in existence. Probably a Moscatel, but might be a Bual. Originally purchased by the grandfather of the Borges family (hence "Pather"). His wish was that it eventually forced the family to do so. Kept in demijohns for most of its life."

Madeira

The island of Madeira has been producing and exporting its namesake wine virtually since the Portuguese discovered it in 1419. Since then, Madeira’s location in the middle of important trade routes meant the success of its wines mirrored the worldwide geopolitical situation. The fortified wine’s fortunes have soared during times of peace, prosperity, and free trade and plummeted during conflict and international upheaval.

Tasting Note

Tasting Note

Tasting note: After opening the wine needed to come around and open up. Already a short time in the glass did its wonders and transformed the aromas significantly. An intriguing, refined nose of subtle fudge notes and floral aromas prevail over sweet fruits. All quite refined and in superb balance, a symphony. Very concentrated, even shortly after opening this Pather is making a strong impression. Must have been a high-quality wine from the start. Which makes you think how Madeira looked when the grapes for this wine were harvested, a rare emotion.

The start of taste is fairly rich for a Terrantez, flowing out in a soft but very concentrated way. Finalizing with impressive aromas and a highly concentrated acidity, all in superb balance. The start is fairly rich while the finish is dry, all with high extracts. A strong wine of Royal Class, complex, impressive, with a fantastic balance. This is amazing, beautiful, full of emotions that leaves you speechless. Grateful to enjoy such a history in a bottle.

The day after I was able to re-taste this 1720 from the same bottle, now after 24 hours it showed fantastically well. Strong flavored and multi-dimensional.  This is so complex, with a sheer superb balance. In the same a touch drier style of the highest quality. Especially the taste is fantastically balanced, refined with infinitive life ahead. Vinous 300-year-old history of unbelievable high quality. It’s with honor to those who harvested these grapes in the early 18th century that I bow my head.  Last tasted 8th July 2020. Edwin Vos.
